Fitness and Training Tips for Ama Yangri Trek
Trekking Ama Yangri is a relatively easy experience compared to other major destinations in the Himalayas. However, it is crucial to have at least basic fitness and make some light preparations. Even if the trekking route is not steep and challenging, it is still a rugged mountain route. Similarly, you will also need to trek upto the elevation point of 3,771 meters (Ama Yangri Peak). During the trekking day to the peak, you will walk for approximately 6 to 7 hours round-trip. So, in order to make your trek a remarkable and memorable experience, we recommend you to begin your preparation at least 4 to 6 weeks before the trek.
Aerobic exercises (cardio) help you to build stamina. These exercises will also help your body to adjust to high-altitude atmospheres more efficiently. You can include exercises like cycling, jogging, swimming, skipping rope or hiking to develop your stamina. Similarly, building your length strength, core strength and upper body strength is also equally important. Ascending on the steep uphill section requires strong legs and core stability. As for the core strength, it helps with posture and balance when trekking on uneven trails.
Note: If this is your first time doing a Himalayan trek, you can do some practice hikes before joining the trails. Carry your backpack with some weight and hike to high-altitude steep sections near you.
