                      Useful Information

Best Time for Kailash Mansarovar Overland Tour

Choosing the right season is very important for a safe and enjoyable experience during this Kailash Kora Tour. For the best experience months from May to June and September to October are considered the most ideal period for this tour. During these months the climate is relatively mild and the roads remain accessible. The temperatures of the high-altitude Tibetan region are also pleasant during this period. But, remember that the nighttime temperatures are cold but bearable. If you set your trek during the recommended frame you will be accompanied by the pleasant weather and lush scenery which will enhance the experience.

As the roads remain open and safer the overland tour will also be seamless. This tour is also possible from July to August which is the core period for monsoon in Nepal. The higher arid landscape of the Tibetan region is not affected that much by the monsoon season. On the contrary, by late October the high altitude atmosphere en route of this Kailash Kora tour is affected by the winter atmosphere. During the winter season, the extreme cold, roads blocked by heavy snow and drop in oxygen levels make the tour challenging.

                      Kailash Mansarovar Overland Tour

                      Food and Accommodation

Since the Kailash Mansarovar Overland Tour itinerary takes you to the remote and high-altitude region, the food and lodging services available here are pretty basic. You shouldn’t expect luxury services and prepare yourself for the basic facilities, remember that this a pilgrimage tour and not a vacation. There are basic guesthouses and lodges with shared bathrooms along the route. The accommodation establishments do offer beds but the mattresses can be thin and the blanket may not be sufficient for temperature drop during the night.

That’s why it is important to bring a sleeping bag tested for four seasons regardless of your chosen period for the tour. Similarly, the electricity and hotel facilities at the guesthouses and lodges are limited. As for the trekking route above Mansarovar (Dira Puk and Zuthul Puk), there are no hotels in the region. You will stay at a monastery guesthouse, community shelter, or tenanted camps.

                      Food (What Will You Eat?)

During this pilgrim tour, you will only be able to enjoy the vegetarian meals. Although the food choices in this remote part of the Tibetan region are basic they are sufficient. As Tibet is not a luxury food destination you can expect simplicity, warmth and high-energy meals during your tour rather than gourmet dishes. For breakfast, you will have the option to choose from light yet filling dishes that are designed to keep you energized through the long travel days. The most common breakfast menus at the guesthouses and lodges in Tibet are Tibetan Bread, Rice Porridge, Boiled Eggs or Scramble Eggs, Tibetan Butter Tea, Fruits, Tea, Coffee, etc.

Likewise, the dinner and lunch are also simple but filling. Rice with Dal, Tibetan Thukpa, Momo, Basic Salad, Boiled Potato, Chapati, Instant Noodles, Vegetable Soup, etc are the beloved options. As for the drinks and beverages you can choose between several options such as Tibetan Butter Tea, Regular Black and Milk Tea, Hot Water, Herbal Tea, etc.

Note: Don’t forget to bring electrolyte powder which helps with dehydration and altitude sickness. Also, high-energy and easy-to-carry snacks like dry fruit, energy bars, biscuits and crackers, glucose powder, etc can be really helpful when you are feeling low in energy.

What Kind of Fitness is necessary?

You need to understand that the Kailash Mansarovar Overland Tour is a physically demanding experience. Although you will travel by vehicle for the most part of the journey during the Mount Kailash Parikrama, you will need to traverse across the high altitude rugged landscape. The trekking part of this pilgrim tour lasts three days and it is not just a casual walk. You will need to walk through high-elevation points where the oxygen level is lower, temperatures are freezing and the route includes several ascending and descending segments.

If you do not make proper preparations, the journey can be extremely demanding. To comfortably complete this tour, you will need at least a moderate level of fitness. You will need to prepare yourself for walking at least 10 to 15 km during the Kailash Kora part. Similarly, endurance is also important you will be following a gradual face during the trekking part walking about 6 to 7 hours per day on average. That’s why your training module should focus on cardio and stamina building. Jogging, swimming, cycling, etc are great for building lung capacity. Similarly, strength training exercises like squats, lunges, step-ups, planks, crunches, etc will improve your body’s capabilities to sustain physical activity for long hours.

Note: People with heart conditions, high blood pressure, severe asthma, or respiratory diseases should consult a doctor before taking part in the tour. Likewise, the elderly trekkers should be medically cleared for the journey. Even if you are able to hire a horse or porter for Parikrama, you will still need to be in decent shape for the tour.

Acute Mountain Sickness in Kailash Mansarovar Overland Tour

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) happens when your body fails to adjust to the high-altitude atmosphere. The Kailash Mansarovar Overland Yatra rises upto the maximum elevation of 5,630 meters (18,471ft) at Dolma La Pass. Meaning, it is very crucial to follow an acclimatization schedule and be vigilant for the symptoms of altitude sickness. There is just a risk of AMS in this high altitude route not other severe forms like HAPE and HACE. During the tour, you will have to be careful with the general symptoms of altitude sickness like headache, dizziness, loss of appetite, fatigue, trouble sleeping, etc.

While moving along with the Kailash Mansarovar Overland Tour itinerary with Marvel Adventure, you will follow a gradual pace and will also get a sufficient rest period before switching to the higher elevation points with low oxygen levels. Still, it will be best if you understand the key steps to prevent altitude sickness such as:

                      • Taking the acclimatization period seriously
                      • Stay hydrated (3 to 4 liters of fluid per day)
                      • Eating light and high-carb meals
                      • Walk slowly and take sufficient breaks
                      • Take AMS medication (need to consult a doctor first)

Note: Don’t ignore the symptoms of altitude sickness no matter how minor, it can take severe form if you don’t pay proper attention early on.
