Ghorepani - Poonhill - Ghandruk Trek is one of the most favoured short yet exciting treks in the exquisite Annapurna region of Nepal. This trek is a slightly extended form of the ever-popular Ghorepani Poonhill Trek, with the trail to Ghandruk, the beautiful ethnic village of the Gurung people, being the addition.

Well-renowned for its Himalayan views, beautiful flora and fauna, and highly enriched culture and traditions, this Ghorepani Poonhill Ghandruk Trek is worth a go for those wishing to enjoy the fascinating natural and cultural aspects of Nepal.

The trek begins from Nayapul and goes through the picturesque ethnic villages and the blooming rhododendron forest. Along the way, we tackle the challenge of climbing 3300 steps up to Ulleri, which is quite demanding, but the beautiful scenery all around makes up for it.

As we trek through the densely forested path of Ghorepani, you can witness the charming red blanket of rhododendron flowers, many such beautiful vegetation that adorns the trek throughout and a chance to encounter many rare floras and fauna in the Annapurna Conservation Area.

A short hike uphill from the beautiful village of Ghorepani takes you to Poon Hill, the best sunrise viewpoint of the trek, impeccable for admiring the marvellous Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges in the sparkling sunlight during dawn and dusk. Popular as the Photographer's paradise, Poon Hill is a wonderful place to snap splendid photos of the ever sparkling snow-capped mountains and the stunning sunrise view.

After spending some quality time in Poon Hill, we resume our trek through the beautiful forest and streams to Ghandruk, the Gurung village. The highly enriched Ghandruk village gives you an insight into the culture, traditions and lifestyle of the local people. The Old Gurung Museum over there also helps you know more about the historical and cultural aspects of this heavenly place.

Marvel Adventure conducts the Ghorepani - Poonhill - Ghandruk Trek with a professionally designed itinerary and all the necessary arrangements. Join us and enjoy one of the most rewarding short treks in the foothills of the Annapurna region.

If you want an extended trek to experience the breathtaking beauty of the Annapurna region, we also offer a 12 days Annapurna Circuit Trek, allowing you to immerse yourself in the beauty of the Himalayas in a slightly longer timeframe.

Essential Information

...

Why adding Ghandruk changes the Trek's character

This isn't just a longer version of the standard Poon Hill trek. The Ghandruk extension shifts the entire experience from a sunrise-focused short trek into a genuine cultural loop through one of the Annapurna region's most significant Gurung settlements.

What the Ghandruk extension actually adds

  • Instead of returning the way you came after Poon Hill, this itinerary continues south through Tadapani and down into Ghandruk before looping back toward Nayapul. It is a proper circuit rather than an out-and-back.
  • This adds roughly 2 extra trekking days to the standard Poon Hill itinerary, bringing it to 7 days total.

Why Ghandruk specifically matters

  • Ghandruk is one of the largest and best-preserved Gurung villages in Nepal, with traditional stone architecture, a genuine living culture, and a Gurung Museum that adds real depth most short Annapurna treks don't offer.
  • Many of Nepal's Gurkha soldiers have historically come from this exact village. A layer of history that gives Ghandruk a different weight than a typical trail stop.

Who this combination suits

  • Trekkers who want Poon Hill's sunrise but feel a standard 4-5 day itinerary is too short, or anyone specifically interested in Gurung culture rather than just mountain views.
Accommodation

Ghorepani section

  • Same standard as the shorter Poon Hill trek. You can easily find well-equipped teahouses, among the better-developed on any short Annapurna route.

Tadapani

  • More basic than Ghorepani, reflecting its role as a smaller waypoint rather than a major destination. Tadapani usually offers simple rooms and functional facilities.

Ghandruk

  • A step up again. Ghandruk's status as a significant village means better-established lodges, some with genuinely good views directly onto Annapurna South and Machhapuchhre from the room or dining area.

General standard

  • Twin-share rooms with shared facilities throughout, consistent with other Annapurna teahouse treks, though Ghandruk and Ghorepani both offer some of the better options on this specific route.
Food and Local Specialties

Standard fare throughout

  • Dal bhat, noodle soup, momos, and the usual teahouse staples are available consistently across all three main stops.

Ghandruk's Gurung influence

  • Some lodges in Ghandruk serve dishes with a distinct Gurung influence such as millet-based preparations and local vegetable curries that differ subtly from the standard Annapurna teahouse menu found in Ghorepani.

Tadapani's limited options

  • Expect a narrower menu in Tadapani given its smaller size. This is the one stop on the trek where food variety drops noticeably compared to Ghorepani or Ghandruk.
Difficulty of the Trek

Where this itinerary is harder than the standard version

  • The long Tadapani to Ghandruk descent, combined with the Ulleri climb earlier in the trip, means your legs face more sustained downhill and uphill stress across the full loop than the shorter Poon Hill version demands.

Who should consider this versus the shorter version

  • Trekkers with reasonably good fitness and a few extra days available get genuinely more out of this trek. But anyone tight on time or less confident physically may prefer the shorter Poon Hill itinerary instead.
Communication and Facilities

Mobile network and WiFi

  • Consistent with the standard Poon Hill trek through Ghorepani and Tadapani. You can find reasonable NTC coverage and WiFi at most lodges.
  • Ghandruk, being a larger and more established village, generally has reliable WiFi and mobile coverage, often better than the smaller Tadapani stop in between.

Charging facilities

  • Available throughout the trail at all three main stops, typically for a small fee and consistent with standard Annapurna region teahouse practices.

Ghorepani Poonhill Ghandruk Trek FAQs

What is the Ghorepani Poon Hill Ghandruk Trek?

The Ghorepani Poon Hill Ghandruk Trek is one of the most popular short treks in Nepal. It combines the famous Poon Hill sunrise viewpoint with beautiful Gurung villages like Ghandruk. At Marvel Adventure, we often recommend it to travelers looking for a rewarding Himalayan experience in just a few days.

How difficult is the Ghorepani Poon Hill Ghandruk Trek?

Honestly, it's one of the most manageable treks in Nepal. We have noticed that many trekkers find the stone staircase climb from Tikhedhunga to Ulleri to be relentless, and the early morning Poon Hill push catches people off guard. The altitude is low enough that it rarely becomes the limiting factor.

Is the Ghorepani Poon Hill Ghandruk Trek suitable for beginners?

It's genuinely our top recommendation for first-time trekkers. The altitude is low enough that serious altitude sickness is uncommon and high enough that the views are spectacular.

How many days does the Ghorepani Poon Hill Ghandruk Trek take?

Our standard itinerary includes 7 days. It gives you a proper pace without feeling rushed and includes the Poon Hill sunrise. You will also get to experience the Gurung culture of the Ghandruk village, which is considered to be one of the most beautiful villages in Nepal.

What is the best time to do the Ghorepani Poon Hill Ghandruk Trek?

Spring (Mar-May) is the one we point most people towards. The rhododendron forests from Tikhedhunga to Ghorepani are in full bloom, and it's genuinely one of the most beautiful trails in Nepal during that window. Autumn (Sep-Nov) gives the clearest mountain views and the most reliable weather.

Why is Poon Hill famous?

Poon Hill is famous for its sunrise views over the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges. Based on the feedback from our clients, the early morning panorama is often the highlight of their entire trek.

What mountains can I see from Poon Hill?

On a clear day, you can see peaks such as Annapurna South, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Dhaulagiri, Hiunchuli, and several other Himalayan giants from the PoonHill viewpoint.

What makes Ghandruk special?

Ghandruk is one of the most beautiful Gurung villages in Nepal. You can genuinely enjoy its traditional stone houses and authentic local culture with stunning mountain views and a relaxed atmosphere.

Is the Ghorepani Poon Hill Ghandruk Trek family-friendly?

Yes, it’s one of the most family-friendly treks in Nepal. Over the years, we have regularly guided families with children and older trekkers to complete the Ghorepani PoonHill Ghandruk trek.

Are hot showers, charging, and Wi-Fi available during the trek?

Yes, you can easily find these services as they are available in most of the villages. However, Wi-Fi and charging usually come with a small additional fee, depending on the lodge.

What food is available on the Ghorepani Poon Hill Ghandruk Trek?

You'll find dal bhat, noodles, soups, pasta, fried rice, potatoes, eggs, pancakes, tea, coffee, and various local dishes. You will realize that the food choices are generally better than many higher-altitude treks.

Do I need a guide for the Ghorepani Poon Hill Ghandruk Trek?

Under the current Nepal government regulations, yes, a licensed guide is mandatory as solo trekking is no longer permitted in this region. You will realize that a guide genuinely improves the trek. Our guides have been on this trail more times than they can count, and they still love it.

Why book the Ghorepani Poon Hill Ghandruk Trek with Marvel Adventure?

Because we actually know this trail, not from brochures, but from walking it repeatedly with real trekkers in all conditions. Our guides are licensed, local, and genuinely passionate about the Annapurna region. What you get with Marvel Adventure is a trek that goes the way it's supposed to, along with a team that handles it properly when it doesn't.
