Essential Information

..

Best Time for the Annapurna Panorama Trek

We would say this trek rewards spring more than almost any other route we operate. From late March through April, the trail from Ulleri to Ghorepani turns into a tunnel of blooming rhododendrons with red, pink, and white covering the hillside in a way photos never quite capture.

  • Spring (March-May): Our top recommendation specifically for this trek. Rhododendron forests in full bloom, mild daytime temperatures, and clear morning views from Poon Hill before afternoon haze builds.
  • Autumn (October-November): The most reliable weather window with crisp air, sharp mountain visibility, and the clearest sunrise panoramas of the year from Poon Hill.
  • Late February - Early December: A genuine option on this route specifically, since the maximum altitude stays low enough that winter closures aren't the issue they are on higher circuits.
  • Monsoon (June-September): We mostly recommend skipping it. Leeches on the lower trail and persistent cloud cover erase the entire visibility. So there its very rare that you get to see the Himalayan panorama.
Trek Difficulty and Fitness Requirements

The Annapurna Panorama Trek is an accessible region of Himalayan trekking, but the trail still has specific challenges that catch people off guard.

  • The real challenge isn't altitude, but it's stairs: The climb from Tikhedhunga to Ulleri on day one is a relentless stone staircase that gains roughly 700m in a few hours. It's the hardest single stretch on the entire route, done before most people have found their trekking legs.
  • Daily walking averages 4-6 hours on a well-maintained but uneven trail, with one steep pre-dawn climb to Poon Hill (3,210m) being the only section above 3,000m.
  • Altitude is not an issue for most trekkers. Serious AMS is rare at this elevation; mild headaches are possible but uncommon with a sensible pace.
  • Who struggles most: We have noticed that it's not the unfit, but the unprepared people who didn't expect the descent from Ghorepani to Tadapani to be harder on the knees than the climbs were on the lungs.

Based on our experience, anyone who can manage a long, hilly day walk back home handles this trek without serious difficulty. A few weeks of regular walking beforehand is plenty of preparation.

Accommodation and Meals During the Trek

Teahouses here are genuinely a step above what you'll find on other remote circuits, and that's specific due to this route's popularity and access to Pokhara.

  • Ghorepani's lodges are some of the better-equipped teahouses on any short Annapurna route with solid beds, proper blankets, and a few places with attached bathrooms.
  • Ghandruk and Tadapani offer comfortable rooms with a strong Gurung cultural presence in the architecture and hospitality.
  • Standard setup throughout: You will easily find twin-share rooms, shared bathrooms in most lodges, and a communal dining hall that becomes the social centre of every evening.
  • Food variety is genuinely good for a trek this short. Menus include dal bhat, momos, fried rice, pasta, pancakes, and fresh vegetables from farms along the route.

Bring a sleeping bag liner as a backup. A proper sleeping bag isn't essential here due to the moderate altitude, but it helps add comfort on cooler nights in Ghorepani.

Permits and Entry Requirements

You will require two permits, both processed in Pokhara before you reach the trailhead.

  • Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP): NPR 3,000 for foreign nationals.
  • TIMS Card (Trekkers' Information Management System): NPR 2,000

The permits are arranged from the Nepal Tourism Board office. We process both permits as part of every package, so this is one thing you genuinely don't need to think about once you've booked. You will require a passport copy and passport-sized photos. Bring both as checkposts ask for them along the trail

Weather and Temperature Guide

The Annapurna Panorama Trek has one of the most comfortable temperature ranges of any major Himalayan route, which is also the reason it suits first-time trekkers so well.

  • Daytime temperatures (Spring/Autumn): 15 to 20°C in the lower villages, dropping to 8 to 12°C at Ghorepani.
  • Nighttime temperatures: Can be 2 to 5°C at Ghorepani in October and November; closer to 5 to 8°C in spring.
  • Poon Hill summit morning: This is usually the coldest point of the entire trek for many trekkers due to wind chill at 3,210m before sunrise.
  • Winter (December - February): daytime walking remains pleasant in the lower sections, whereas nights at Ghorepani regularly drop below 0°C.
  • Rain risk: There is minimal rain outside the monsoon, though brief afternoon showers aren't unusual in late spring.
Trek Crew and Support Team

Every group is supported by a licensed guide and a porter, and on a trek this size, that support structure matters more than people expect.

Your guide handles navigation, monitors pace, manages teahouse bookings, and carries first-aid essentials throughout. Your porter typically carries up to 15kg of your gear, leaving you with just a daypack for water, layers, and camera gear.

Our guides on this specific route know the Gurung and Magar communities personally, which often opens up small cultural moments like an invitation into a kitchen, a story about a particular lodge that a guidebook can't offer.

Communication, WiFi and Charging Facilities

Connectivity on this route is noticeably better than on longer, higher Annapurna or Everest region treks.

WiFi is present in most teahouses below Ghorepani, generally reliable for messaging and light browsing. Above Ghorepani: signal becomes slightly slower but rarely disappears completely, unlike on remoter circuits where connectivity vanishes entirely. We highly recommend a local Nepali SIM (NTC works best in this region), which gives decent coverage through most of the route.

Charging facilities are also available at all teahouses, usually for a small fee of NPR 100-200 per device.
